Omega Speedmaster Apollo 8 Tribute

The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 8 pays tribute to one of the most important missions in space exploration. In 1968, Apollo 8 became the first human mission to orbit the Moon, and every astronaut aboard carried an OMEGA Speedmaster. OMEGA introduced its first Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 tribute in 2018 for the mission’s 50th anniversary and later developed an updated version with enhanced movement decoration and technical refinement.

The Grey Side of the Moon-inspired design combines the Speedmaster’s recognizable chronograph identity with a dramatic lunar theme, making it particularly appealing to collectors interested in horology, space exploration, and technically advanced watches.

44.25mm Black Ceramic Case

The Apollo 8 tribute uses a 44.25mm case, with the case, bezel, and caseback constructed from black ceramic. This material creates the characteristic dark appearance of the Dark Side of the Moon collection while providing a modern technical aesthetic.

The polished bezel contrasts with the darker case architecture, while the tachymeter scale is filled with bright white Grand Feu enamel, adding definition to the chronograph’s racing-inspired design.

Lunar-Inspired Skeletonized Movement

One of the most distinctive features of the Omega Speedmaster Apollo 8 is its movement decoration. The manual-winding Calibre 3869 features a laser-ablated representation of the Moon across the blackened main plate and bridges.

The dial side represents the Moon’s surface as viewed from Earth, while the reverse side reveals the far side of the Moon. This creates a three-dimensional visual connection between the watch and the Apollo 8 mission.

Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3869

OMEGA’s tribute design incorporates numerous visual details intended to commemorate that achievement.

The caseback includes the phrase “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE,” referencing Jim Lovell’s words before Apollo 8 disappeared from radio contact while travelling around the Moon’s far side.

Saturn V-Inspired Small Seconds Hand

Another distinctive detail is the small-seconds hand positioned at 9 o’clock. OMEGA created this component from Grade 5 titanium and shaped it to resemble NASA’s famous Saturn V rocket.

Its three-dimensional structure is produced using laser turning, while different finishing and colouring techniques create the final appearance. This subtle detail adds another direct connection to the Apollo program.

Yellow Chronograph Details

The central chronograph seconds hand is finished in yellow varnish, creating a vivid contrast against the predominantly black and grey design.

The same yellow theme continues onto the perforated strap, which uses black rubber with a yellow interior. This combination gives the watch a distinctly sporty appearance while maintaining its sophisticated ceramic construction.
